Backforty Glamping in Ontario, Canada

Gotta say, this would be my Dad’s idea of “camping.”

Growing up, my mom and dad had very different versions of “camping.” My mom would hike us out to Yosemite, Walmart sleeping bags in hand, and we’d pitch the 4 person tent for the 5 of us, lather all us kids in mosquito spray (and I’m saying DIRECT SPRAY to the face, nothing more traumatizing), roast some hot dogs over someone else’s fire (we weren’t stellar at starting fires) and lay out $10.99 sleepin bags straight on the earth and half-sleep through the night before trekking us up Half Dome at age 7. And it was great.

On the other hand, if my dad was choosing our adventure, it was a whole different story. My dad made glamping a thing before it was a thing. We’d all pile into the minivan, strap one of those big silver box tv’s with a screen the size of a CD case in-between the front two passenger seats and hit the road. We would trade out our nylon walls for wood paneling as he’d always manage to find a rental cabin positioned strategically near a lake and a pizza joint and the occasional hot tub. And it was great.

To be honest, it’s completely underrated to love both. Campers love to sneer at the glampers and glampers gasp at the campers. But they can both be equally enjoyable experiences – and without a shadow of a doubt my Dad would fully approve of Backforty Glamping in Ontario, Canada.

My husband Joey and I got to stay overnight in one of these globe-like domes during their opening week and man, you wouldn’t even need that silver box TV to entertain you at night because the see-through roof gave us Californians enough stars to look at for a lifetime. Each dome is fitted with a full kitchen, AC & heat (let’s go summer AND winter), a private porch with a hot tub (Dad would REALLY love that), welcome drinks, a king size bed and full bathroom. No midnight outdoor potty breaks here, folks. It’s set on expansive acreage so you feel completely out-of-town, but you’re close enough to Blue Mountain for a midday ski or even a slice of pizza. ;) My kind of access right there.

We visited at the end of summer, but can’t wait to return in the deep winter where all the dome will be piled in snow (again, the heater comin’ in clutch). If you’re looking for a little Ontario escape, can’t recommend this luxurious spot enough for a safe little solo retreat or couple getaway.

You can see the TikTok walkthrough we made here (that popped off to 1.5 million people – hah, I guess other people are interested in glamping, too!).

Glad to have you along with me.
